The game, typically involving 2 to 6 players with one or two standard decks of cards and a printed Joker in each deck, pushes you to strategize and outmaneuver your opponents.
How Do You Play Points Rummy?
Points Rummy is a card game for 2 to 6 players. It is played with one or two standard decks, each containing a printed Joker.
To understand the game’s goal, players must concentrate on organizing 13 cards into either sequences or a mix of sequences and sets to make a legitimate declaration. A sequence includes three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, whereas a set consists of three or four cards of the same rank but from different suits.
To declare a valid hand, a player needs to create at least two sequences, with one being a pure sequence, and ensure that all cards are organized into legitimate sequences or sets. After organizing their cards, players declare by discarding their 14th card into the ‘Finish Slot.’ If the declaration meets the criteria, the player secures the win.
At the beginning of the game, each player receives 13 cards, while the rest are placed face-down to form the closed deck. The top card from this closed deck is flipped over to establish the open deck. Additionally, a card is randomly chosen as the wild Joker, making all cards of the same rank wild. This wild Joker can substitute any card in a sequence or set. Throughout the game, players draw a card from either the closed or open deck and discard one from the open deck, with turns proceeding clockwise.
How is Score Calculated in Points Rummy?
In Rummy Points, the cards are ranked from highest to lowest: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Each face card and ace are worth 10 points, while the numeric cards carry their respective face values. The Joker card, on the other hand, has no point value in the game.
In Points Rummy, the race to be the first to declare a valid hand is where the real competition lies. The player who achieves this feat earns the coveted zero points, signaling their victory in the game.
The winnings are determined using the following formula:
Winnings = (Sum of opponents’ points) X (Rupee value of point) – Classic Rummy fee.
For instance, in a game where each point is worth Re. 1, and there are four players if a player declares while the others lose 20, 10, and 40 points, respectively, the winner will collect 70 rupees (1 x (20+10+40) = 70 rupees), minus a nominal Classic Rummy fee. The amount will then be deposited into the winner’s account.
In Points Rummy, players who fail to win are penalized with points for each card, which are not part of a sequence or set. For example, if a player holds the 6 of Hearts, 10 of Spades, and Ace of Clubs without forming any groups, they incur a penalty of 6 + 10 + 10 = 26 points. Nevertheless, there are two exceptions to this rule:
- If a player has no pure sequence, the total points of all the cards will be added as the penalty.
- If a player holds a pure sequence, only the points from the ungrouped cards will be totaled for the penalty.
In Points Rummy, a player’s penalty points are capped at 80. Thus, regardless of whether a player’s ungrouped cards total more than 80 points, they will be penalized with a maximum of 80 points.

The Rules of Rummy Points:

If a player skips three turns in a row, they are automatically removed from the game, known as a Middle Drop, and incur a penalty of 40 points.
